Chapter 17

CIA Headquarters

Langley, VA

HARRY SAT IN THE SMALL SCIF, THE DOOR TO THE hallway sealed shut. Annoyed by the debriefer’s monotonous voice broadcasting from the red speakerphone, he listened distractedly as his analytical mind processed the information that Peyton had just shared with the team. Harry looked at Ken Washington, then at the phone, and said, “If there’s nothing more for me, I’m out of here. I need to get back to work.”

“Thanks, Harry,” the debriefer said.

Peyton’s familiar voice followed. “I’ll call you later.”

Harry pushed the speaker button to hang up. He sat back and draped his left arm over the back of the adjacent chair. “So, what do we know here? Kuchecki gets fired from his job and relocates to Bushehr. Suddenly he’s interested in an American sent to investigate a nuclear plot at the facility there. What are the odds?”

“Getting slimmer by the minute, Harry.”

“So, if Kuchecki is indeed behind this and has plans to buy a weapon, what do we conclude?”

Ken thought a minute before he responded. “He has a connection in China?”

“Well, of course. That would be Fang. But what’s the source? Could be Russia, China, Pakistan, India, probably in that order of likelihood.”

“Logical.”

Both men sat back, crossed their arms and stared at the table. Harry leaned forward quickly and put his elbows on the table, his fingers steepled against his brow. “Ken, if our conclusion is correct and Kuchecki is buying a weapon, then we’ve overlooked an important factor.”

Ken looked at Harry, one eyebrow raised.

Harry quietly continued. “A lot of money has just changed hands.”

Ken leaned back in his chair and raised his hands. “Of course. We follow the money,” he replied.

“Let’s get the Financial Intelligence Operations people on this. They need to look for sums out of Iran to numbered accounts as well as similar amounts between numbered accounts in the last week.” The FIO tracked money in and out of bank accounts to identify possible terrorist funding sources. Although a closely guarded secret, not even numbered accounts in the Caribbean or Switzerland were safe from scrutiny by the FIO.

“I’m on it.” Ken pushed the chair back and headed quickly to the door.

As the door clicked shut behind him Harry leaned way back in the chair, put his feet up, and interlaced his fingers behind his head. He closed his eyes and began to hum Wagner’s Flight of the Valkyries while he mentally sorted though the scraps of information for each and every possible connection. Each thread by itself led to a dead end but taken together they began to form a picture. Now, at least, he had catalogued the possibilities.
